The envelope sees repeated heating (burner cycles) and cooling across altitude changes, plus landing abrasion. The scrim’s multi-directional tensile and tear resistance arrests crack initiation at gore seams, panel corners, and load-tape zones, while low elongation prevents permanent panel distortion that would affect the envelope’s volume and flight trim.
The scrim adds meaningful tensile reinforcement at very low GSM, keeping the total envelope system weight down — directly protecting gross lift margin, fuel economy, and maximum flight duration, which are the defining metrics of balloon design.
